Sustainability

As the world changes around us and as each new generation develops, the environment and resources that we have relied on for so long risk damage and depletion. The concern for these issues has become forefront in the minds of many and plays a significant role in decisions made regarding new products, energy sources, legislation and personal choices. The world as a whole is now focusing on becoming sustainable.

Sustainability is simply the ability to endure.
It is utilizing and protecting our resources in a way that will nourish and renew and provide continued sustenance for generations to come. It is the job of every person and every company to work to maintain these resources and Church Brothers has made it a priority to accept our Corporate Responsibility and embrace Sustainable Practices. There are several efforts that differentiate us from other companies and demonstrate our active concern for our environment and our future.

Our Growing Team aggressively implements Sustainable Practices on a daily basis.
We take special care to choose seed varieties designed to reduce the use of pesticides, chemicals, fertilizer and water. Each of our growers works with the State Water Resources Control Board in order to protect ground water from pesticide contamination. Increased dependency on groundwater for drinking and other beneficial uses makes these practices necessary to ensure the quality of groundwater for our future supply needs.

Another way we protect our groundwater is by controlling the water pollution caused by irrigation. By knowing the daily water use of our crops, the water holding capacity of the soil and the lower limit of soil moisture for each crop, we are able to determine the water needs and control the rate, amount and timing of the irrigation water. We control the manner and application of water to minimize runoff and soil erosion and design water transport systems to eliminate as much water loss as possible. We also line irrigation channels to reduce seepage to ground water. Another important issue our growers manage is the control of intrusive animals. CB Food Safety works closely with the growers to implement exclusion measures for intrusive animals instead of eradication methods.

All of our field waste is recycled.
Within our Harvesting Fleet, no trucks are more than three years old. We aim for optimum fuel efficiency in all our vehicles. A cutting edge development is our new Low Impact Harvester. These harvesters operate with the same productivity as our previous harvesters, yet this uses five gallons per week versus 100 gallons per week!

Once our product reaches the cooler, we continue to “go green” by gravitating away from white cartons to dry Kraft cartons that cannot only be recycled, but are made from recycled paper. Our packaging footprint has also been significantly minimized. We have reduced the size and structure to avoid over-packaging and eliminate excessive use of plastics.

We have recently moved our plant to a new location. We are completely self contained and in close proximity to the fields. This enables the plant and field to work together efficiently and productively. We have also changed our operating hours to non peak hours, limiting the demand for energy during peak times.

All of our plant water is also recycled.
Creating a sustainable environment is an on going process and as a locally owned and grown company, Church Brothers realizes the value of nurturing and sustaining the resources it depends on. Sustainability is a part of who we are: Church Brothers does not just think responsibly, we ACT responsibly. Church Brothers is leading the way in sustainability.
